It’s no secret that the hemp plants, and the CBD substance it produces, are touted as a gamechanger in regard to health and wellbeing. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that recent years have seen a direct correlation between the popularity of CBD and the number of people with medical issues that have been cured.
Whilst the actual ins and outs of how the magical green compound weaves its wand in order to nullify certain health difficulties is still very much a grey area, there are some things that are known – specifically, which conditions CBD can help to treat and to what extent you can expect a successful recovery. *Before exploring this topic, click here to read about exactly what CBD is and how it may be useful to you* – otherwise, lets delve right in:
Anxiety and depression:
Over the years, a significant number of case studies have looked into just how cannabidiol can be used to heal numerous neuropsychiatric disorders. Perhaps one of the most significant and up-to-date ones, published by Neurotherapeutics, presumes that topical CBD has a ‘’considerable potential as treatment for multiple anxiety disorders.’’
To further solidify this claim, research published by the Journal of the American Society for Experimental Neurotherapeutics concludes that “preclinical evidence strongly supports CBD as a treatment for anxiety disorders’’. Such disorders include PTSD, generalized anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and seasonal affective disorder.
Epilepsy:
Subjective studies into the use of CBD as a form of treatment for epilepsy have been around since… well, the dawn of mankind. Not only is it one of the most researched derivatives of the subject, it’s also one of the most heavily supported. One such instance is this one, published by the New England Journal of Medicine in May of 2018.
The study summarises that CBD is proven to be a successful means of limiting, or drastically reducing, the amount of seizures suffered by a person with two forms of epilepsy – the Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS), and the Dravet syndrome. This was later confirmed and approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Symptoms related to cancer treatment:
The crucial thing to remember here is that it’s NOT yet proven that CBD can effectively cure cases of cancer, rather, it helps to reduce certain symptoms suffered by cancer patients that cause them difficulties. Such symptoms include nausea and vomiting, which are often the side-effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
The U.S Food and Drug Administration have now approved of two types of cannabinoid drugs that can/should be used by patients: Marinol (dronabinol) and Cesamet (nabilone). Whilst research into CBD and its effects on the formation of cancerous cells are still in very, very early stages, one thing is very much a tangible theory: CBD may slow the growth of cancer cells, according to the American Cancer Society – perhaps it could one day prove to be the successful cure we’ve been searching for so many years.
Acne/skin-related issues:
The journal of Clinical Investigation published a study several years ago regarding the use of topical CBD and how it can act as a powerful antiacne solution, with most evidence suggesting the reason for this is the abundance of anti-inflammatory properties found within the substance.
This claim is further supported by studies conducted by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, which found that CBD is a useful agent in reducing the itch and inflammation issues associated with skin-related problems such as eczema and psoriasis. The study also found that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is just as effective but considering the legality issue with the usage of THC, you may or may not be able to use it, depending entirely on the laws surrounding your local/national area.
Diabetes:
Generically, when you consider the demand for fast foods and the upward spiral of unhealthy eating habits given the Coronavirus situation, the numbers of Diabetes cases have also been on the increase. Luckily, multiple research facilities have examined the potential role that CBD could play in treating diabetic patients.
One such study was conducted by the American Journal of Pathology, whilst several other observational studies have been conducted, with the findings showing that people who frequently use marijuana, or CBD in our case, have a drastically lower fasting insulin level and measures of insulin resistance, as opposed to patients who don’t use the substance. Make of that what you will.
High blood pressure:
White-coated scientists in Eng-er-land previously conducted a study into the effects of CBD on a group of healthy men, with the age gap ranging from 19 to 29. All the subjects had never smoked in their lives, marijuana included, and the results were startling: a single dose of CBD managed to reduce the idle blood pressure in their bodies by 6 millimetres of mercury (mmHg).
You may wonder why that sounds like such a big deal, and that’s simple – it significantly reduces the risk of suffering from a stroke. This study, released by JCI Insight, says that the reason for CBD’s role in reducing blood pressure could be due to the anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) and analgesic (pain-reducing) effects. That swiftly brings me on to my next point, and perhaps one of the most well-known…
Pain-reduction capabilities:
First, you have to understand how it reaches your body, and I’ll duly explain: When CBD is emitted into the body, it will eventually reach a cluster of receptors, or cells that receive stimuli, which are known as vanilloid receptors. The subsequent interaction results in lower inflammation levels and a reduced perception of pain – according to this study published by Current Neuropharmacology.
A follow up study, conducted by the European Journal of Pain, found that those who suffer from arthritis can use the green coloured all-mighty-source-of-all-powers to reduce the pain they suffer in their joints. I personally know many people who’ve used it for this purpose, and they could not be happier with their decision to use CBD to help manage to discomfort. This study carried out by the European Journal of Pain supports this.
